Threads Residency

Threads brings together work by our 2025 Artists in Residence alongside contributions from volunteers and visitors who have connected with Johnstone Textile Space over the past year. The exhibition reflects the breadth of practice nurtured within JTS from mixed media and free machine embroidery to weaving, painting, installation and moving image, unified by a shared investigation into textiles as carriers of memory, labour, identity and community.
Textiles are both material and metaphor. They hold histories within their fibres: domestic traditions, industrial heritage, personal narratives, and collective experience. In Johnstone, a town shaped by textile production, these histories remain embedded in place. Threads respond to this legacy not through nostalgia, but through active making. The works presented here explore repair, reuse, record-keeping, landscape, sustainability, and the translation of memory into material form.
