At Johnstone Textile Space (JTS), we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome, valued, and respected. As a new organisation still developing our networks, we are dedicated to embedding Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles in all aspects of our work — from our internal practices to the artists, creatives, and community members we engage with.
Embedding EDI in Our Programme
Our year-round programme of exhibitions, events, and outreach activities is designed to reflect the diversity of our community and the wider cultural sector. We actively consider how we can create opportunities that are accessible and inclusive, with particular attention to removing barriers faced by those with protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010 — including age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
To achieve this, we will:
- Actively seek to work with artists, makers, and creative practitioners from underrepresented groups.
- Develop partnerships with organisations that support marginalised communities to ensure our programme reflects a broad range of voices and experiences.
- Consider accessibility at every stage of our planning — from ensuring physical access to providing alternative formats for communications and appropriate support for those who need it.
Inclusive Recruitment and Opportunities
We are committed to ensuring our recruitment and commissioning processes are fair, open, and inclusive. This applies to staff, volunteers, and the creative practitioners we engage. We will:
- Use inclusive language in job descriptions and opportunity listings.
- Promote opportunities widely through diverse networks to reach people from varied backgrounds.
- Provide clear guidance and flexible application processes to reduce barriers to participation.
Creating a Welcoming Environment
We are dedicated to ensuring that everyone who works with or visits JTS feels safe, valued, and heard. We will:
- Deliver training to staff and volunteers to promote inclusive practices.
- Implement clear policies that promote respect, equality, and zero tolerance for discrimination, bullying, or harassment.
Ongoing Commitment and Learning
We recognise that creating an inclusive environment is an ongoing process. We will actively seek feedback from our steering group, board, volunteers, and community members to ensure our approach to EDI continues to evolve and improve.
By embedding these principles in our work, JTS is committed to building a creative space that celebrates diversity, nurtures inclusion, and ensures equal opportunities for all.
